Policy and Research
COACH: Cooperation Action within CCS China-EU
The COACH project aims to establish broad cooperation between China and the EU in the field of CCS. It is partially funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme.
STRACO2: Support to Regulatory Activities for Carbon Capture and Storage
This project is designed to support the development of a regulatory framework for CCS in the European Union. It is funded by the European Union and run by Development Solutions.
CO2 Net
The Carbon Dioxide Knowledge Transfer Network. Initially set up and funded under the European Commission's FP 5 Programme in 2002. The network comprises over fifty organisations in 18 countries, all at the forefront of CCS.
Carbon Capture and Storage Association
This London-based non-technical trade association was launched in March 2006 and aims to represent the interests of its members in promoting the business of CCS.
Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum
The CSLF is an international climate change initiative focused on the development of improved cost-effective technologies for the separation and capture of carbon dioxide for its transport and long-term safe storage. Membership is open to national governmental entities that are significant producers or users of fossil fuel and that have a commitment to invest resources in research, development and demonstration activities in CCS technologies.
European Technology Platform for Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ETP -ZEP)
EU-based platform with the aim of enabling European fossil fuel power plants to have zero CO2 emissions by 2020.
Aims to improve the understanding of CO2 injection into coal with regards to long term reliable and safe storage.
CACHET is an European Commission funded project which aims to develop technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants by 90%.
The Scottish Centre for Carbon Storage
The SCCS brings together Heriot Watt University, the University of Edinburgh and the British Geological Survey, building on their expertise in petroleum and hydrocarbon geoscience. It is funded by the Scottish Funding Council and was established in 2005.
IEA Greenhouse gas R&D Programme
The International Energy Agency's Greenhouse Gas Research and Development Programme is a major international research collaboration that assesses technologies capable of achieving deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions; focussing on CO2 capture from gaseous fuels.
The IEA Clean Coal Centre
The International Energy Agency's Clean Coal Centre provides unbiased information on the sustainable use of coal world-wide.
The World Coal Institute leads research in the clean coal technology area.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Scientific panel tasked with evaluating the risk of climate change caused by human activity.
Demonstration projects
In Salah, in Algeria, is operated by BP, Sonatrach and StatoilHydro. This joint venture has overseen the capture and storage of one million tonnes a year of CO2 from its natural gas refinery. Since 2004 the project has compressed, dehydrated, transported (via two pipelines) and stored the CO2 in a deep saline formation close to the gas-field. Three state-of-the-art horizontal wells are used to store the CO2 2km below ground. The storage formation is a low-permeability Carboniferous Sandstone, which is commonly found in the USA, northwest Europe and China - regions with high CO2 emissions.
Vattenfall (Swedish power company operating across the North of Europe) are developing a pilot 30MW thermal plant CCS plant at Schwarze Pump in Germany to be completed by mid-2008. In addition they are planning three demonstration electricity plants with CCS in the 250-350MW range for completion by 2015.
Greengen
GreenGen is a world-leading Chinese expert in coal power generation. One of its objectives is to design, build and operate the first coal-based, near-zero-emission GreenGen power plant in China.
MOST
The Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China.
ACCA21
The Agency responsible for implementing the Agenda 21 in China.
FutureGen
Based in the USA, FutureGen is a public-private partnership to design, build and operate the world's first coal-fueled, near-zero emissions power plant. To date, a site has been selected for the plant in Mattoon, Illinois.
National Energy Technology Laboratory
The only US national laboratory dedicated to fossil energy technology.
CO2CRC
The Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies is a research venture comprising Australian and New Zealand organisations, as well as international bodies.
The UK Government Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), is made up the Climate Change Group formerly within the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and the Energy Group within the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR). The links below refer to the existing data on Defra and BERR websites.
BERR Carbon Abatement Technologies
The UK Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform runs a Carbon Abatement Technology programme to address the future requirements for reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel power generation.
Defra
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is involved in a range of work regarding climate change, in addition to funding NZEC.
