Work Package 1

Work package 1: Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building

A key factor in the success of NZEC will be that the information we generate from our work is communicated widely in order to create a better understanding of all the issues related to CCS.  Our audience of Chinese and international academics, industrialists, policy-makers and the general public, will be vital in supporting the development of CCS in China to the point at which it is widely used.

The research work of the project will also build the capacity of the Chinese partners involved, giving them the skills, experience and contacts to be able to champion the cause of CCS in China.

WP1 is jointly led by ACCA21 (Mr Li Gao) and AEA (Miss Philippa Harris).  Together we have developed a strategy for how we will share knowledge and develop capacity under the project.  The strategy involves the following activities:

Dissemination activities:

  • Websites: The project website, www.nzec.info has now been fully developed.  At present this is only in English but the website will be fully dual language within a few weeks.  ACCA21 are also developing a separate, Chinese language web site.  This will become the definitive resource for all issues regarding CCS in China, highlighting the various international initiatives currently ongoing.
  • Publications: A 1 page, dual language flier introducing the project is available.  A more detailed outline of the project objectives and activities will be available shortly.  In addition to the dual language newsletter and articles in various technical and non-technical journals, we will be producing interim and final summaries of the results of Phase 1.  The availability of the summaries will be announced in future newsletters.

Capacity building activities:

  • ACCA21 will be leading the development of a reference book on CCS in Chinese to help inform our key target audiences.
  • Other activities that are likely to be undertaken are the development of training materials for Chinese academic institutions and study tours to Europe for policymakers.
  • A key aspect of our capacity building work will be funding a number of Chinese researchers to study at various academic institutions in the UK which are leaders in the field of CCS.
  • Members of the project's Chinese partner organisations will also be funded to travel to conferences and seminars around the world to present the work of NZEC, keep up-to-date with cutting-edge developments in the field, and establish good international networks.

Events:

  • Several events will be held throughout the project to provide opportunities for any interested parties to keep up-to-date with progress and participate in discussions - input we value greatly.
  • We held a very successful launch of NZEC on 20 November 2007 in Beijing.
  • The next event will be a short briefing session on Thursday 15 May 2008 at the Beijing Railway Hotel.  For further details and to register, click here.
  • We plan to hold an interim event in Autumn 2008 and a final dissemination event in Autumn 2009.  Details of these events will be advertised in future newsletters.
