Work Package 2: Future Energy Technology Perspectives


Whereas Work Packages 3 and 4 respectively address the technologies to achieve cuts in CO2 emissions and where the CO2 might be safely stored, the aim of Work Package 2 is to assess the potential that CCS could have in reducing emissions from the Chinese power generation sector and other energy intensive sectors. 

Professor Chen Wenying of the 3E Institute at Tsinghua University and Keith Burnard of AEA are jointly leading Work Package 2.  Work is being undertaken in China by the 3E Insitute, the Tsinghua-BP Clean Energy Research Centre and the Energy Research Institute.  Support is being provided by AEA, BP and Shell from the UK.

In this work package, an energy systems analysis exercise will be undertaken to provide a perspective on the energy technologies that may be deployed to meet the energy needs in China to 2050.  The energy sector in China will be analysed, with a detailed investigation undertaken of the various technologies and fuels deployed at present.  Predictions will be made of the technologies and fuels that may be deployed to meet its future needs.  The potential for CCS to reduce CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, and the cost and impact of deploying CCS will be examined.

The energy demand and main points sources of CO2 in selected provinces will also be assessed.

A review of China’s historic energy service demand is presently underway, with particular reference to selected end-use sectors.  In parallel, the UK is undertaking a short study to review experience to be gained from OECD countries.  Together with a technology assessment, these studies will provide the basis for future energy demand to be modelled.
