Work Package 3 focuses on investigating the technology options for capturing carbon from coal fired power stations and assessing which options are most suitable for use in a demonstration plant in China. The work is being led by Imperial College in the UK and jointly in China by GreenGen and the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (IET), Chinese Academy of Sciences.
At present there are three generic processes for capturing carbon from combustion plants:

Work Package 3 partners in Beijing, December 2007 meeting.
Following the NZEC launch event in October, Work Package 3 has had three meetings in Beijing, in November, December and January to discuss and plan future work scope and deadlines.
The NZEC project and the WP3 case studies were described by UK Co-Leader Jon Gibbins (Imperial College) at the UKTI CAT Mission meeting in Beijing on 17 January and at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office climate change meetings in Shanghai and Guangzhou in March; they were also discussed during a BBC World Service Discovery series programme on CCS in February. UK partners Imperial College and Doosan Babcock met for an initial discussion of the oxyfuel case studies and further bilateral and group meetings are planned shortly.
Recently, at a meeting on 23rd April in Beijing, Shell, BP, Imperial College and Chinese partners concentrated on CO2 transport and gasifier-based capture studies.
